I don't really want to turn into an /r9k/-style alpha vs. beta circlejerk, but I think that men who can lead and are patient could successfully have several wives without the whole thing going to hell. More than 3 or so would start to get complicated.

A lot lies on the woman/women. It only takes one bad woman to ruin a man's life, even without the addition of polygamy. I would imagine a polygamist has to screen their spouses really well and/or be ready to ditch them at the first sign of trouble.

I think we are looking at a societal norm in western culture designed to ensure that there are enough women to go around, and keep the populace happy. Birth rates favor monogamy, if there was more of one than the other, than you would start to see multiple wives/husbands. This isn't uncommon in other cultures where one sex, say the women are killed off at birth at a higher rate than the men.

@1844 I think that great pain, either physical, mental or emotional is a good reason. I was mostly just curious as to what others thought though.
There's no legitimate correlation between gender and appropriateness of crying. It's arbitrary. If you want a contextual answer, it's okay for a guy to cry if the people he's around think it's okay for him to cry, or if he's alone and doesn't tell anyone who won't think it was okay for him to have cried.

There are a lot of factors in play. For one, there exists a "catch-22" situation in which there isn't enough activity to keep people coming back regularly, and because they don't come back regularly they don't create activity.
