I think there is a genetic predilection towards it, but as a bisexual, I can tell you I learned it over time.

I think it by choice and by circumstances that they grew up in, but there may be some tendencies so don't know

I'm leaning toward the possibility of a genetic predisposition, but in the end I think it's choice. You can't necessarily choose to be attracted to the opposite sex, but you don't have to screw 'em.

I think that a portion of people are born with a tendency towards a homosexual identity. However, most of the gay/lesbian people I know have had significant trauma/sexual abuse as children, and I believe that has led to complete chaos in many areas of their life, including their sexuality.

I really just don't understand it... you'd have to be retarded not to understand that heterosexuality is the natural order...

I think homosexuality results from the embryo being exposed to abnormal levels of hormones during its development. That's what many studies show.

@1671 I haven't heard this, do you have any links?

March 26 2010, 23:06:10 #1673 [0 Agree] [0 S] [0 T]

@1670 Sure, heterosexuality is the norm. But think of people who are genetically or otherwise predisposed towards alcoholism, for example. They don't "choose" to have extreme reactions to alcohol, or to form strong dependencies on it, they are just wired that way.

@1673 Who says they can't choose not to drink though?

March 26 2010, 23:57:57 #1675 [0 Agree] [0 S] [0 T]

@1674 They CAN choose not to drink, but if they do drink, they will have stronger reactions.

It's not meant to be an analogy, but to show that you can genetically lean toward something that is abnormal, through no fault or "choice" of your own.

Interesting.

So what, if any, are the implications of the origins of a person's sexual orientation?

that some were made to control the species inflation.

If @1671 is true, doesn't that make homosexuality a birth defect? FLAME SUIT ON

March 31 2010, 15:24:37 #1694 [0 Agree] [0 S] [0 T]

...so being gay is like being retarded??

April 4 2010, 03:14:21 #1703 [0 Agree] [0 S] [0 T]

From an evolutionary standpoint, being gay could be called a defect. Gay people are less likely to pass on genes. I think think that we as a society tend to not look at things from an evolutionary perspective. Thus, not passing on your genes isn't particularly frowned upon, and as such being gay should not be seen as a defect.

I never understood why people are so adamant to push evolution as the "origin story" of choice, yet refuse to acknowledge the implications of such in real life.

Exactly. If we abide only by evolution and logic, we are merely highly evolved primates who like to lie to themselves a lot. There is nothing wrong with this. It just makes things like religion, spirituality, ethics, morals, etc. all products of sociological evolution, and therefore, essentially meaningless beyond their ability to promote further propagation of the species.
