Welcome to m.essag.es!
This is a user-moderated fully anonymous bulletin board.
Remember: + spam or + troll if you think a post _IS_ spam or trolling, minus if not.
MNB (the software running this board) does not allow any formatting code (HTML, BBcode, etc) - it will be escaped and displayed as entered. MNB does not automatically convert or mangle links. MNB does not allow editing of posts. If you want to correct your post, post again.
MNB allows the following moderation options:
* You may moderate plus or minus on these three categories: agree, spam, troll
* You may moderate posts once in each category
* You may not change your moderation on a post in any category
* You may not moderate your own posts, if you are recognized as the same user
Current configuration will allow you to filter troll and spam posts if they are moderated as such to +2 or higher. You must click the "Hide Spam" or "Hide Trolls" links in order to use this feature. This will be adjusted as necessary. Remember that you can always see all posts.
Anticipated questions:
Q: Is there a login or moderator control panel?
A: No. There are no administrative capabilities. Posts can only be deleted or made sticky via direct access to MySQL.
Q: Why?
A: Anonymous communication is vitally important in keeping the internet relevant to political and societal change, especially as government interference and regulation grows.
Q: Will you delete offensive posts?
A: No. As noted, there is no easy way to delete posts; it must be done from MySQL and I'm lazy. The only reason I can see for deleting posts would be if there were a spam bot attack.
Q: What's to stop spammers?
A: Nothing, but this site is set not to be indexed, and you can't link to anything automatically, so the payout of such an effort should be nil. Should usage grow, some throttling capabilities may be added.
Q: Can I have the source code?
A: Code should be public some time in 2010.
Feel free to post questions on this thread and I will try to respond.

Also, the server hosting this site does not store an access log.

This forum also works very well from mobile web browsers. I'm posting this from my cell phone with the crappy OpenWave browser that comes with most phones.

Anonyminity for the win.
Also, it works fine in Lynx. Kickass. It should indent replies though.

Ratings can go negative; OP is −1 troll. Interesting.

I would like a "quote" feature. Implement it the way that 4chan does.

Quote and reply are definitely on the list, I just need to figure out the best way to handle them. I think it will be @12345 for replies and *chan-style > quotes

Lol, some formatting is broken in IE, but who gives a poop.

How the hell is formatting broken on IE? This is the simplest layout evar.

How does bumping/thread sorting work?
November 16 2009, 18:05:04 #44 [Y/N 0 Agree] [Y/N 0 S] [Y/N 0 T] [@]
When you reply and do not sage, the latest post time of the OP is updated to your post's timestamp. When you sage, the latest post is not updated.
Sort order is: !ignored first, sticky first (by sticky value, 255-0), latest post newest first.
Also, I fixed some XHTML errors in the templates and should be passing validation now... I think that may fix IE.

The reply box is broken in Firefox 3.5 on Windows 7.
The actual message box is bigger than the blue background that's supposed to contain it.

@51
I'm aware of the reply box bug... it affects quite a few browsers actually, but it's purely aesthetic so I've put off fixing it. :P Maybe I'll get to that tomorrow.

Note to self: decrease textarea cols="44" to fix in Chrome.

New feature! Replies (@nnn) are now clickable links and also: 4chan-style post highlighting so you can tell which post you've jumped to.
Next on the list: improve replies/quotes

@145 Why wouldn't it? Safari on iPod Touch = Safari on a Mac/PC normally. As far as HTML/CSS/Javascript rendering, I don't think they took out /anything/.
@160 hot. also, make URLs clickable and show previews if the URL is an image.

Alright, there is now a reply feature, by clicking the @ sign in the post info area... adds the reply to the textbox, scrolls you down to the reply box.

New features:
* Added sage count, statistical bump on saged threads
* Added post count to thread list (index)
Sage is now counted & recorded, as well as marked with a nice sage-green "SAGE" next to the post. The more a thread is saged, the higher the likelyhood is that a regular non-sage post will not bump the thread. This may or may not remain a feature, depending on whether it's used for good or evil.
Also I've saged in this post in order to show off the cool new sage marker.

no -_-, I'm able to go as far down as @866
it wont go further than that and wont show any kind of comment box anyway.

@884 Ah, I've fixed it. The page was running out of memory on the server because of how restrictive my settings were. I increased the memory limit and it seems to work fine now.
Thanks for bringing that to my attention!

Couple minor changes today:
* Allowed search engines to index the site
* Style toggle, see the other thread about this
* Fixed the memory problem as per @890
* Disable page caching to make sure that your browser always grabs the current content of a thread etc
December 23 2009, 00:09:18 #906 [Y/N 0 Agree] [Y/N 0 S] [Y/N 0 T] [@]
And a few more:
* Unique anonymous identifiers are removed from posts after 6 hours
* Moderation records are deleted after 6 hours (this does not undo the moderation but removes the record of what unique anonymous identifier it came from)
* Posts that "fall off" the 5th page are archived away and cannot be bumped back... there will be an interface to view these threads soon, but there is not now. Nothing has been lost!

December 23 2009, 04:13:39 #915 [Y/N 0 Agree] [Y/N 0 S] [Y/N 0 T] [@]
actually I agree with 908, now we'll be getting tons of stupid people and probably a lot of trolls/channers (probably 4channers asking for child porn) I'd prefer if this had stayed off the indexing and was essentially invitation only...
December 23 2009, 08:19:27 #916 [Y/N 0 Agree] [Y/N 0 S] [Y/N 0 T] [@]
@915 I honestly don't think the influx is going to be that much... I've posted the URL to m.essag.es on 4chan a few times and it was ignored or ridiculed, which is fine. I think that the lack of images should keep away most of the /b/tards who are only interested in porn etc.
Of course, if it causes problems I'll consider disallowing search engines again, but because we have the moderation system and the ability to ignore threads I think we'll be fine.

December 30 2009, 22:04:44 #968 [Y/N 0 Agree] [Y/N 0 S] [Y/N 0 T] [@]
Nothing new that affects the browsing experience, but I've instituted an automatic backup where the site including database (but not identifying hashes) is backed up nightly and then downloaded automatically to another host.
The plan, once we start growing, is to have a few volunteers start downloading the backups and hopefully even have a plan so that any one of them can host a copy of the site temporarily should there be a problem with my main hosting.
The significance of this isn't really visible at this point, but in the future my hope is to make it impossible to shut down or destroy the content of m.essag.es.

Added some simple captcha-type functionality when posting URLs or trying to post fail-links. Also tweaked the styles somewhat to hopefully counteract how horrible the site looked on Windows.

The text (in Firefox) is much bigger than usual and/or a different font. Do not like.
January 5 2010, 22:12:52 #997 [Y/N 0 Agree] [Y/N 0 S] [Y/N 0 T] [@]
@996 Firefox has text resizing, so probably the best solution would be to use ctrl-minus and ctrl-plus (PC) to adjust the font size to your liking. I may make the default font size smaller though.
