Bright idea, how about an "I Hate the Federal Government" thread? Post what you hate about them the most.

The BATFE http://m.essag.es/t/1453 [link]

But also the IRS. Basically I hate anything that is even remotely unconstitutional.

canadian here, weapon laws, they fail.
The reasoning behind our gun laws is some thing along the lines of guns hurt people, and people with guns hurt people so if we get rid of guns then people who would hurt people wont hurt people!
There are a lot of stupid laws regarding knives too, but the gun ones are the most blatently stupid, the way to gat a gun in canada requires you to take a course, upon succesful completion you are required to take a test (btw you paid around 200 for the course, you are now paying for the test too, not to mention the cost of getting that gun...) where if you pass you get a license... and there are 3 different licenses. So ya weapon laws suck here, if they helped people NOT get hurt I'd be all for them, but I hate a WOMBAT (Waste Of Money, Brains And Time) and/or an ineffective system that is enforced solely because some idiot with -authority- says it should be enforced :-/

@1524 Amen man, I don't think I could handle Canada.

@1524 Ugh, that sounds terrible. Has no one over there done the studies that prove crime rates rise with higher gun control, and not the other way around? Or is there just no one high up enough who cares?

what they seem to not understand is there is no consequences for criminals when they can be sure that their target has no weapon.
They did do the studies then the twisted it all around with media, to make it sound like the reverse... piss off, knife laws are an even worse gong show, but at least you can get them unlike the way the brits/aus handle knives.

A quote from my favorite Terry Pratchett book, Night Watch:

"There had been that Weapons Law, for a start. Weapons were involved in so many crimes that, Swing reasoned, reducing the number of weapons /had/ to reduce the crime rate.
Vimes wondered if he'd sat up in bed in the middle of the night and hugged himself when he dreamed /that/ one up. Confiscate all weapons and crime would go down. It made sense. It would have worked, too, if only there had been enough coppers--say, three per citizen.
Amazingly, quite a few weapons were handed in. The flaw, though, was one that had somehow managed to escape Swing, and it was this: criminals don't obey the law. It's more or less a requirement for the job. They had no particular interest in making the streets safer for anyone except themselves. And they couldn't believe what was happening. It was like Hogswatch every day.
Some citizens took the not-unreasonable view that something had gone a bit askew if only naughty people were carrying arms. And they got arrested in large numbers...
... It wasn't that the city was lawless. It had plenty of laws. It just didn't offer many of opportunities not to break them. Swing didn't seem to have grasped the idea that the system was supposed to take criminals and, in some rough-and-ready fashion, force them into becoming honest men. Instead, he'd taken honest men and turned them into criminals..."

exactly how many people make laws, look at one part of the picture, and assume the rest will fall into place in their idealization.
As pointed out, criminals wont comply, they are in it for themselves, point in case, if I decided I wanted a gun I could (I know I could because I've had this oppertunity [this is the canadian again]) walk down to the downtown area in my city after 10pm and as long as I look veguly the part I could have a guy offering me a gun and optional supressor for around 40% whatever prices I would pay at a gun store.

"The people of the various provinces are strictly forbidden to have in their possession any swords, bows, spears, firearms or other types of arms. The possession of these elements makes difficult the collection of taxes and dues, and tends to permit uprising." – Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Japanese Shogun, August 29, 1558

At least he was honest about it!

Back then it was okay for the ruling class to openly think that they were inherently better than everyone else.

idk about you all but i think we may be looking at a violent uprising in the usa, esp if the largely unpopular healthcare bill passes...

I don't think it will happen yet, though it remains a possibility. Of course, I doubt it would get as much support as even the Civil War did, and as such would be put down much faster. I think that more people believe in a solution through the political system, even if it means changing the system a bit.
