Welcome to m.essag.es!

This is a fully anonymous user-moderated bulletin board.

MNB (the software running this board) does not allow any formatting code (HTML, BBcode, etc) - it will be escaped and displayed as entered. MNB does not automatically convert or mangle links. MNB does not allow editing of posts. If you want to correct your post, post again.

MNB allows the following moderation options:
* You may moderate Yes or No on these three categories: agree, spam, troll
* You may moderate posts once in each category
* You may not change your moderation on a post in any category
* You may not moderate your own posts

Current configuration will allow you to filter troll and spam posts if they are moderated as such to +2 or higher. You must click the "Hide Spam" or "Hide Trolls" links in order to use this feature. This will be adjusted as necessary. Remember that you can always see all posts.

Anticipated/asked questions:
Q: Is there a admin/moderator control panel?
A: No. There are no administrative capabilities. Posts can only be deleted or made sticky via direct access to MySQL.

Q: Why?
A: Anonymous communication is vitally important in keeping the internet relevant to political and societal change, especially as government interference and regulation grows.

Q: Will you delete offensive posts?
A: No. As noted, there is no easy way to delete posts; it must be done from MySQL and I'm lazy. The only reason I can see for deleting posts would be if there were a spam bot attack.

Q: What's to stop spammers?
A: Some very minor anti-spam methods are in effect, nothing that would thwart an actual human poster. Should usage grow, some throttling capabilities may be added.

Q: Can I have the source code?
A: Yes, but you have to find me and ask nicely.

Q: What is a troll?
A: A troll is somebody who is purposely posting off-topic or inflammatory material in order to derail a conversation.

Q: What is spam?
A: Spam is anything not related to the stated topic of the thread.

Q: What kind of information about me is being stored?
A: We generate a unique identifier based on your IP address and session ID that is attached to posts and moderation but is removed after 6 hours. This cannot be used to find your IP address without a supercomputer. We have Google Analytics in place but this can easily be blocked by blocking google's analytics servers. Neither the unique ID or Google Analytics are used on encrypted threads.

Q: What about web server access logs?
A: This server does not store an access log. It does store an error log.

Q: What are encrypted threads?
A: Encrypted threads allow you to have an unlisted conversation with any number of private parties that is encrypted and decrypted in-browser. The encryption keys are never transmitted to the server.

Feel free to post questions on this thread and I will try to respond.

Who would be interested in being able to receive email notifications when a thread is replied to?

November 30 2010, 14:20:35 #2020 [Y/N 4 Agree] [Y/N 0 S] [Y/N 0 T] [@]

Doesn't it kinda defeat the point of anonymous posting to have an email addressed tied to particular topics?

November 30 2010, 16:29:34 #2021 [Y/N 1 Agree] [Y/N 0 S] [Y/N 0 T] [@]

@2020 No, not for every situation.

1. Not all topics are sensitive enough to require complete anonymity
2. Email addresses can be at least mostly anonymous
3. Email addresses would not be tied to specific posts, meaning that it would not be possible to prove that any given email address belonged to the author of any given post

Couple of notes:
* Accounts are coming; email addresses will not be required - username and password only
* Accounts will be completely optional
* Accounts will not be associated with posts
* Accounts will allow users to subscribe to and ignore threads
* At some point, there may be other features available to registered users, but none of the existing functionality will ever require an account

A list of ignored threads will now be displayed at the bottom of thread list pages and threads can be un-ignored by opening them and clicking the "Stop Ignoring" link.

I think they make it harder to prevent spam and do not promote conversation.

Question:
Do posts on here eventually "die" (404)? What about encrypted posts? Is there a limit to the number of posts that can be made in a thread?

July 28 2011, 20:17:08 #2597 [Y/N 0 Agree] [Y/N 0 S] [Y/N 1 T] [@]

@2596
1. Only un-replied threads
2. Not yet, but they will expire after a year of inactivity if traffic picks up
3. No

this should have the ability to upload images as well. for both encrypted and unencrypted threads.

October 1 2011, 14:41:01 #2649 [Y/N 0 Agree] [Y/N 0 S] [Y/N 0 T] [@]

@2646 We don't have the moderator capacity to deal with the legal issues that images open up (kiddie porn).

I would suggest posting images to http://imgur.com [link] and then posting the link to the image (with extension) in the thread in question.

I've fixed an error with the encrypted thread checkbox on the post page. Very sorry for the inconvenience, chaps.
